Which Desktop Mac Computer Should You Buy?

Unlike the Windows world of computers, Apple make it relatively easy for their customers to choose a package that suits them. They only have three broad categories of desktop computer available, with a few different customizations for each one. However, despite the small range of Macs, they all come with different pros and cons. Here’s a guide to help you if you’re not quite sure which desktop Mac to choose.

What Are You Going To Use Your Mac For?

Although there are huge differences in the power and performances of all the desktop Macs, you’ll probably only notice these differences if you use more intensive programs such as graphics software or play the newest games.

If you mainly use word processors, make presentations, or browse the internet then you’re unlikely to feel the added benefits of buying the more expensive desktop options. But if you regularly load up many programs at a time, then you’ll find that your computer is more likely to “hang” than with the more powerful options.

And, if you play games, then you should discount the Mac Mini and the lower end iMacs. The higher end of the iMac range and the Mac Pro will let you play your games in full glory, including the newest releases.

Is Cost A Factor?

If cost is a factor then you’re probably going to discount the Mac Pro right away. Your choice is between the Mac Mini, and the iMac. The former is by far the least expensive of the Mac desktop family, but you have to bear in mind that it doesn’t come with a screen, a keyboard or mouse. Apple assume that you’ll already own these. If not, then you may be better off with the all-in-one solution from the iMac, which is also more powerful overall.

Do You Want The Newest Technology Available?

If you’re the kind of person who always wants to make sure you have the latest model as soon as it’s been released then you’ll want to do some searching online to find out how long it’s been since the model you’re interested in was last updated. Apple release updates every year, at different times. So, if it’s been a year or so since the Mac Pro was last updated, for example, you may want to wait until they release the next model.

If you do this, however, bear in mind that you could be waiting a long time! You never know what Apple has in mind. If you need a computer now, it’s well worth buying one you can use. Computers are always outdated very quickly. The good thing about choosing from the desktop Macs – especially the Mac Pro – is that you can upgrade them at a later date.

A Quick Overview Of The Options Available

As you can tell, this article doesn’t have a clear winner for which desktop Mac you should buy. It really depends on what you’re going to use it for and how much you have to spend! Here’s a quick overview of who the various Macs are targeted towards:

Mac Mini: For those who want the cheapest Mac they can get for simpler, less intensive tasks. Also for those who want something very small that doesn’t take up much space. Could work well as a second desktop computer.

iMac: Probably the most popular option for appealing to a broad range of users. You can choose a customization that will suit your needs exactly, and the most powerful iMac offer is good value for those who want a very powerful machine without the price tag of the Mac Pro. It also looks great, contained within one flat panel.

Mac Pro: This is for those who are serious about using intensive applications and games, and want the very best Mac that money can buy. If you want to connect up to eight screens to your desktop computer, this is also the Mac for you.
